Course Description

The risks associated with disease transmission in the dental office are low, yet
healthcare associated infections do occur
.

Last year the Journal of Infectious Diseases reported a case of dental office patient-to-patient transmission of hepatitis B. This unexpected occurrence emphasizes the need to ensure dental office compliance with infection control standards. Even though disease transmission in dentistry is rare, the potential consequences may be profound. The basic principles of infection control in dentistry have changed little, however new technologies, materials, equipment and data require continuous evaluation of current practices. The unique nature of dental procedures require specific strategies directed to preventing the transmission of pathogens between and among dental healthcare workers and patients. This course complies with New York State, CDC and OSHA guidelines and requirements.

Course content includes:
 Emerging disease concerns
 Post exposure management
 Employee health issues
 Office practices and routines
Recommendations to respond to the unexpected
